John Cage is unique his music doesn’t follow the pattern as other sound artists do. How do you listen to something you write? John cage is a Musical Composer and a Writer. John Cage has many influences. In the beginning his influence was Arthur Schoenberg , a Classical Composer with whom he had worked with. Others were Marcel Duchamp, who revolutionized 20th century art by presenting everyday unadulterated objects in museum settings as finished work of art which were called “found art,” or ready mades by later scholars. In the 70’s his influences were Thoreau and Joyce.
John Cage describes his musical performance as not just writing music but actually listening to it. He uses literary texts to make his music. He wasn’t connected to the feeling of music which is why he came up with music as listening. Hi music is more dynamic.
He is similar to other sound artists because he produces sounds and works with other people from different genres. For example he worked with Merce Cunningham who is a dancer and Robert Rauschenberg who is a painter. His music is more like an art collaboration.
He is different because he does abnormal things with his music making process and his instruments. No composer would put plates and screws between piano strings before playing it. He also uses other objects as his new instruments to make his sounds and because of his music and writing. when you look at a painting or picture you wonder about the sound that would come from just listening to them.
